How to Download the Latest Version of GreenNet: The Best VPN for Streaming

So how big is too big? Obviously, it depends on the context. If you are signing off on a report that is intended to go to the printers, then emailing a 10MB PDF attachment to a few people asking for final comments is completely reasonable. What would be unreasonable is then to email the finished 10MB file to your list of 2000 supporters. Instead, you could create a lower-resolution or even text-only version of the PDF, put that on your website, and email a link to the file, perhaps with a little indicator of the file size (like "[1.2 MB PDF]") next to the download link.

Although the download might take 15 seconds for some people (eg GreenNet ADSL2+ broadband offering speeds "up to" 12Mbps), 10% of household internet connections in the UK as at 2009 are still dial-up, higher in many other countries. A 10MB download on dial-up might take nearly an hour. And older broadband connections or in rural areas the download speed might be 512kbps and the transfer still takes several minutes. Even on the fastest broadband, uploading is often limited to 256kbps, so if you expect a 10MB file to be retransmitted, that is likely to be slower than expected.

Once downloaded, larger files are harder to manipulate. Large emails can slow down access to an email inbox, and will increase the size of mailbox files on the recipients' computers. Large image files on a web page often have to be scaled by the browser software and mean navigating and scrolling through the page can be slow and erratic. (There are other things that can cause slow "rendering" of a page, such as Javascript or a complex website "back-end".)

Scans or digital photos may be 20 times that size and yet appear no sharper to the recipient. So if you have such an image, you will need to resize it or scale down before you upload or publish. A common mistake when creating a web page is to try to resize the image on the page by changing the image element properties. Some content-management systems, such as Drupal, may include an image module that automatically creates a scaled copy of the image at the size you specify, but if you're editing pages in a web authoring program like Dreamweaver or KompoZer, the chances are you're forcing every web site visitor to download far too much information and then make their computer work quite hard at doing the downscaling. So it's best to try to keep photographic images, even banners, to no more than 800 pixels across and perhaps no more than 50 KB. Any image-editing software, such as the open source GIMP, allows you to easily produce a smaller file. Simply open the large file, choose an "image size" or "scale image" function, select the width you want, remembering that 800px is often full-width, and save in an appropriate file format.

Data transfer speeds can be measured in bits (usually for the rating of the connection itself) or bytes (more commonly for actual download or upload speeds, and shown with a capital "B"). The conversion factor is usually 8 bits to 1 byte (excluding now-rare parity or stop bits). So an old dial-up modem might upload and download at 32kbps, but that is only 4 kBps or 4000 bytes per second. A broadband/DSL connection rated at 8 megabits per second (Mbps) actually only means an absoute maximum of 1MB/s, and a 100MB software package (like OpenOffice) will take at least 100 seconds to download, very possibly longer.

The first requirement for all of these scenarios is the Office Deployment Tool (ODT). No matter which scenario you want to invoke, you need this. Go ahead and download the latest version from -us/download/details.aspx?id=49117. If you have an existing copy of the tool, I would suggest downloading it again. The April release of the tool, version 16.0.6831.5775 adds the support for Visio and Project Click to Run installations. Without it, your installations will fail.

Once you have created your XML configuration file, you need to download the packages that relate to that configuration file. This is really easy using ODT. From an administrative command prompt, type the following command:

After entering the command, you will not see any progress right away. If you look in the directory where you have the ODT tool, you will see a directory created called Office with a sub-directory called Data. Inside the Data directory, you will see all of the .cab and .dat files being downloaded for Office 365 ProPlus, Visio and Project. In my test, I created a single .xml file for all three products. The Data directory totalled 1.86GB in size.

TCPView is a Windows program that will show you detailed listings of allTCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the local and remoteaddresses and state of TCP connections. On Windows Server 2008, Vista, and XP, TCPView also reports the name of the process that owns theendpoint. TCPView provides a more informative and conveniently presentedsubset of the Netstat program that ships with Windows. The TCPViewdownload includes Tcpvcon, a command-line version with the samefunctionality.

By default, TCPView updates every second, but you can use theOptionsRefresh Rate menu item to change the rate. Endpoints thatchange state from one update to the next are highlighted in yellow;those that are deleted are shown in red, and new endpoints are shown ingreen.

The European Commission has adopted a set of proposals to make the EU's climate, energy, transport and taxation policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. More information on Delivering the European Green Deal.

Some technologies will be key in propelling the transition to net zero. In Europe, for example, our research suggests that just 15 technologies could drive 70 percent of the emissions abatement required to reach net zero in the region. Technologies that are mature and already available at a commercial scale, including onshore wind and solar photovoltaic, account for about 25 percent of the abatement potential in Europe, while an additional 45 percent could come from technologies that have an opportunity to be commercialized in the near future. This means that, in addition to renewable-energy technologies and electric mobility, technologies for zero-carbon residential heating (such as heat pumps), carbon capture and storage, green-hydrogen-based fuels, and industrial electrification could support decarbonization at scale.

While it took many years and significant governmental support to scale up renewable-electricity generation, broadening support for the net-zero agenda could enable the next wave of green businesses to grow more quickly.

The alternative-proteins and alternative-dairy examples are, of course, B2C cases. However, scaling early and quickly is an approach that, based on our experience, may help to separate strong green businesses, whether B2B or B2C, from competitors or followers in the same space.

For green business building, incumbents may have advantages, including access to capital and deep institutional knowledge. Some corporate leaders have identified success factors for building a new business in general, such as providing ring-fenced investment in the new business and setting realistic expectations with both internal and external stakeholders on investment needs. However, building a green business can also come with new challenges for incumbents. For example, when scaling a new climate technology, it may be difficult to balance the time it takes to validate the technology on a demonstration scale while also planning industrial-scale installations across different conditions and geographies. Start-ups typically have been the first movers on some green ventures, as they are often equipped with a higher tolerance for risk-taking and the ability to operate at faster speeds.

Proactively create business ecosystems. Many green business building efforts are also value-chain-building efforts. Consider circular materials, like the recycled textiles example mentioned earlier. There is a need to secure effective collection, appropriate sorting and processing, and market-based demand for the recycled textile fibers. No one player is the natural investor in all steps of the value chain. But investments in a single step may be less feasible without all the other steps already in place. Similarly, many new green businesses require new infrastructure around them. In the case of the e-ammonia project, substantial investments in upstream hydrogen and renewable electricity capacity are needed, as well as new transportation and fueling infrastructure downstream. Green business builders look to collaborate with players in their value chains and make sure that the infrastructure and investments come together in a coordinated manner. This could be done through joint feasibility studies or demonstration pilots where relevant players team up. When done successfully, these collaborations could also lead to the captive-demand arrangements described earlier. Once the framework of a new value chain starts to operate and has a financial underpinning, more ecosystem players may start gravitating toward it.

Building a green business is no small feat. It often requires moving at unprecedented speed, setting ambitious growth targets, and planning multiple steps ahead. The mindset green business builders have demonstrated is very close to that of the digital leaders of our time: they have been adept at creating and shaping markets rather than spectating and waiting for the markets to appear, and they have embraced the notion of accelerated scaling. This mindset combined with a few key principles could help propel green business building on the global journey to net zero.
